Reserva El Toledo

Reserva El Toledo is based in Pilangosta, a small community in the hills above Hojancha on the Nicoya Peninsula. This agro-ecological reserve was founded by Costa Rican conservationist Emel Rodriguez, whose career has spanned decades of leadership within Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment. Don Emel has extensive experience working on afforestation/reforestation projects, and has initiated new reforestation and agro-forestry projects at Reserva El Toledo.

The Nosara River is born high in the mountains above Reserva El Toledo and runs through the mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean. ALAP, the GCF and Reserva El Toledo work together to identify project opportunities throughout this watershed which includes a mix of afforestation/reforestation, protection of critical springs and water sources, and agro-forestry. Don Emel also helps coordinate our relationships with local ASADAS (see map below) as we work to ensure water security for the region.

ALAP is seeking university partners to work on agro-forestry and reforestation projects together with Reserva El Toledo in the upper Rio Nosara watershed as part of the newly-created Rio Nosara Biological Corridor.
