University of Georgia Costa Rica
The University of Georgia operates a campus in San Luis de Monteverde. UGA Costa Rica offers dynamic experiential learning programs, internships, and research opportunities.
ALAP director, Quint Newcomer, and UGA Costa Rica general manager, Fabricio Camacho, developed a carbon offset reforestation program for UGA Costa Rica that contributed to the UGA Costa Rica campus being a net carbon sink (including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions — see pp. 20-23 in the UGA Costa Rica Sustainability Report). In addition to reforestation, UGA Costa Rica has extensive experience with the installation of anaerobic digesters which treat waste water, capture the methane gas by-product, and convert this into usable fuel.
ALAP collaborates with UGA Costa Rica campus to develop hands-on programs for ALAP partner university students and faculty. ALAP is currently seeking a university partner to expand the UGA Costa Rica reforestation program into the lower elevations in the Bellbird Biological Corridor, and seeks experienced student interns to serve as the UGA Costa Rica reforestation nursery manager.
